Progressive rock

Progressive rock (often just prog rock or prog) is a genre of rock music that emerged in the second half of the 1960s. Its peak of popularity was in the 1970s, but it still has practitioners today (Dream Theater, The Flower Kings, Spock’s Beard, Marillion). These bands no longer use the word progressive in its original sense, as actual experimentation has been replaced by individual instrumental performances. The style represented by their ancestors has been significantly transformed.

Progressive rock musicians reject the limitations of pop music, and their works (the sophistication of which often rivals classical music) are intended for attentive listening. They often incorporate folk and world music elements into their music.

Progressive rock is characterized by a dynamic and virtuoso performance style. Unlike other types of rock that are easy to dance to and can be used as background music, their music is intended for listeners willing to consciously immerse themselves.
